We're thrilled to announce Coach Beckett Royce will be joining our High Performance Coaching Staff in a lead role this fall.  Beckett brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our HP staff both as a player and as a coach.

Although she picked up rugby in her early 30s, she quickly rose through the ranks representing ORSU as Captain from 2004-2011, the Pac Coast Select Side from 2005-2010 captaining the National Championship team in 2010, USA 7s Developmental team in 2006 and 2007, USA 15s from 2007-2010, and the pinnacle representing the USA at the World Cup in 2010.  Beckett continues to keep her game sharp playing for and coaching ORSU locally.

Her coaching career began as an Assistant Coach with ORSU from 2007-2011. Beckett then took over as Head Coach for Reed College from 2011-2013 while also moving into the Head Coach role for ORSU in 2012 - present.  During her time as ORSU head coach  the team won the Division 1 National Championship in 2014 and was promoted into the Elite Women's Premier League that same year.

Beckett's hard work was recognized this year when she was selected to Co-Coach the WPL All-Star Team that competed against our Women's National Team prior to sending them off to take the world by storm at the Rugby World Cup last month.

When asked about her approach to coaching, Coach Royce shared the following "It is my belief that every rugby athlete (every human being) has a unique mixture of strengths and vulnerabilities.  Rugby is a game that makes use of those strengths, whatever they may be, and allows room to develop the areas where the player may struggle.  My job as a coach is to recognize and encourage a player’s natural talents and also to develop the aspects of their game where they are less comfortable, be those ball skills, team work or decision-making."

She also added her thoughts about the Game itself: "Rugby makes beautiful sense to me.  It is a microcosm of Life… Life how it should be (though not as it usually is).  All shapes, sizes and skill sets are welcome and useful on the pitch.  Support and positivity are rewarded by the Laws.  Creativity is encouraged and cooperation is essential.  Hard work and dedication always bring benefit to one’s self and team alike."

Join us in welcoming Coach Beckett Royce to the Rugby Oregon HP Staff.  She is looking forward to getting to work with our athletes at the Fall/Winter HP sessions kicking off on October 8.
