Required For All Coaches

All Rugby Oregon coaches must have an "active" standing with USA Rugby prior to their first training session. Under the new coaching structure every coach, regardless of their background is responsible for completing the following requirements in order to have an “active” standing with USA Rugby. If you want guaranteed liability coverage then your team needs to be considered “in compliance”. Having a registered and “active” coach is one of the 3 requirements for a team to be considered “in compliance”.

A coach is considered “active” for the membership cycle when they complete the following (for detailed instructions on how to complete each step, select the menu item on the left):

  1. Register as a coach with USA Rugby - All Rugby Oregon teams start with "Rugby Oregon" in the USA Rugby database.
  2. Pass a biennial background screening (completed through registration with USA Rugby)
  3. Complete the Player Protection Package
  4. Complete the appropriate certification course(s)
  5. Annually maintain “active” status

As part of Rugby Oregon and USA Rugby's continuing efforts to place a stronger emphasis on player safety within the sport of rugby, the Player Protection Package was added to the core list of USA Rugby coaching requirements.

The Player Protection Package consists of two FREE online courses revolving around player safety.  Oregon and Washington State law requires annual concussion training.  The free NFHS Concussion course satisfies this requirement.

Completion of these courses should be reported to the USA Rugby Training and Education department.  See below for details.
